Carcassonne is a tile laying game where the aim is to beat your opponents, by strategy and points scoring, not by force of arms for a change.
The basic game of Carcassonne features 72 tiles which allow players to build varying size cities, attempt to complete cloisters and roads and create farms. In addition to the tiles are "meeple" these are coloured wooden people-shaped playing pieces of which each player gets eight to use during the game play. The meeple are what is known as multi-functional, which really means that the same piece can be used for all the different roles in the game, which is great as you never run out of a specific type of piece. There are four types of roles that the meeple take on: knight, thief, monk and farmer.
The game play is fairly simple, take a tile, place it on the playing surface ensuring that it matches up with the existing pieces (eg. road to road or city to city) and then if you wish place a meeple on that tile to represent one of the four roles, providing that your piece does not clash with any currently placed meeple. Once the meeple is down then the idea is to try and get the piece to score by completing the feature with more tiles, without allowing your opponents to score. The farmer meeple do not score until then end of the game and they only score for each completed city they can reach. |
