Title: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on March 26, 2008, 07:03:43 PM
Well, I can't believe the support that I've had from the members here regarding the river tiles I've been making.  So here's a little bit of something for y'all.  I'll be customising new tiles with elements from existing tiles for you (on jpg format).  To get them list in this post which elements you wish to see on the tiles.  My time is limited though and to ensure that everyone gets their chance to see their tiles made, can I request that you keep the requests to a maximum of 4 tiles per post.  I'll process them on a first post first done basis (and ignore the 5th and subsequent tiles in the post).  If possible, please do list the "original" tile (and from which expansion) as well, e.g.

1. the roundabout tile from A&M with a lake
2. The volcano lake tile from Rivers2 with 2 roads and a bridge over the lake (srfr)

I'll post the results in this post for all to see as well.

Edit: If possible, please state the "tile-edge topology" to make it clearer for me to understand.  s=river/stream, r=road, f=farm, c=city/castle

Thanks for this offer - I expect you will get a lot of requests!

I am still interested in the tile I mentioned at the start of the thread on new tiles. This would be the straight road tile with a break in the middle so that the farm connects between the two road segments - so from the top it will be f-r-f-r but the road has two non-connecting segments. To make a set of four you could do the same configuration with a cloister and shrine in the centre and then maybe one with a river running north south - river-road-river-road but without the road bridging the river, or maybe one that had one of the roads connecting to the cloister.

Over to you and thanks again.

Well, you don't have to request for a set of 4 if you only want 1 or 2.  I did 2 anyways - the tile you wanted and the one with the river through it because I already have the river tile handy.  I hope you aren't disappointed with the result:

This is done in actual size, so it's print ready.  (The downside is that it takes ages to load.)  My apologies for the first tile, I didn't realise it looked that bad in full size :(

Wow! These are great Novelty and well worth a merit point . . . I will print them ASAP. I like the road that ends at the boat landing . . . possibilities there for a "ferry" hmmm . .

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on March 27, 2008, 08:35:36 AM
I'm glad you liked them.  Thanks for the merit point.  There's a whole custom expansion with the boat landing for "fishermen" or something.  You have to check the variants forum for more info since it's not done by me.

Novelty, I like your tiles too.
I tried to create some tiles in CorelDraw+Corel Photshop, but I am not so patient as you  ;)
I have problem with river(s). I like these expansions (+ 2 tiles GQ11) and I (we) use variants "three branches" or "fork-start" (according to Joff's material: Variants on the River, thank you Joff :)) with little modification (2 spring+1 lake).
But I regret that I can't use all tiles. Totaly we have at disposal 3 springs, 3 lakes and 1 fork (+ "normal" streams).
Is it possible to think up such tile(s) for logically using all river tiles?
Maybe the second modified fork but floodgate should be needed.

The river tiles are mostly for my variant - Row, row, row your meeple in a boat (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=236.0).

I know about it, but ... something stayed opened ... ;)

....
Hmm... I guess it'll need a rethink.  Any idea what sort of balance for the river tiles would be good?
What would be good though, would be if either RGG or HiG take this idea and produce an expansion with extra river tiles - say about 40 - 60 tiles  :o
....

I probably wasn't the first to come up with them. Many people independently came up with some of the same ideas. All I did was compile them into one place.

Hey Novelty, would you be up to a bigger challenge like making a double-wide scoreboard that goes up to 100? I started on one myself but got stuck. I could send you what I managed to accomplish thus far...

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Deatheux on March 29, 2008, 06:09:14 PM
nice tiles!!!  if i can propose something, on the first river/road tile, i'd like to split in two farms this tiles, just to "reduce" the farm amount of feeded cities.

That's a good idea. I've seen some attempts at this but thought that they were not that good.

However, we use the superb extra points scoreboard: http://www.carcassonne-city.de/ (http://www.carcassonne-city.de/) click on "Grundlage" menu, then "Das Grundspiel" link, followed by  "Umrundungsleiste" link, then lastly "Umrundungsleiste als PDF-Datei" for the PDF file. Print out in 'best' quality and mount to card. I also laminated my copy. You just then need extra markers :)

If you want a board like this for 'Hunters and Gatherers' just click on "Umrundungsleiste zu "Jäger und Sammler" instead of "Umrundungsleiste als PDF-Datei" :)

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on March 30, 2008, 06:15:58 AM
Scott: sure, send me what you have and I'll see if I can doctor something up.

Deatheux: which "first river/road tile" are you talking about?  Do you mean the one with the boat landing?  Well, dwhitworth wanted the farms in the top and bottom connected so I made one where the right side was connected for him, but I can do another variant for you as well with 4 different farm sections.

what a constructive idea(not to make out a sucky tricky word game!) but that 100 pts board is kicking balls!!!

may we have something we can bend in 2... like common boards games(not to throwing name...)

we can made out some more tiles 50/100...

The quality is good, but I'm not keen on keeping track of score in yet another place, or needing another set of six markers.

I'm sending my partially-completed Carc scoring track in PNG format to Novelty via Megaupload (27 MB). If it pans out, then we just need to change the 50/100 tiles to 100/200 tiles. By being double-wide, my intention is that the 0-99 scoring track can fold in half and fit in the original box.

Matt: how about grabbing a copy of that scoreboard and adding it to our downloads page?  I'm sure fair use would allow us to redistribute it without a problem, but if unsure, we could always ask.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles

He, I hadn't checked the file Joff linked to before. But now that I have, I can tell you that it isn't original to carcassonne-city.de. It's actually from the official homepage, buried amongst their list of downloads.

As for adding it to our site, I think I have a better idea. The current downloads are requires the files to actually be located on our (well, my) server. If we move to freely available downloads, I was planning to actually move the downloads page so that it mirrored the FAQ style, and then add manual links to all the files. It would be rather easy then to have a include links to files on other people's sites, without actually duplicating the files and hosting our own version. Then I'll go through the various bits and pieces on the official site and add them all (at least, the useful ones).

Here's a preview of Scott's version completed:

I'm not sure how good the quality is when it is printed as the original copy that Scot was working with wasn't a very good scan to begin with.  This is the small version and I don't think think it's printable.  I'm not going to post the link here to the full big version to make it available because it's a huge file, but will PM it to someone who can load it here on this site as a free download.

The grass near 57 should probably be varied a little more, but other than that it looks awesome.

I scanned the original track as best I knew how. It seemed pretty decent to me, though definitely not as good as the quality of your scans. I am interested in learning how to scan better.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 05, 2008, 11:50:51 AM
I was contemplating placing something on the grass near 57, and building a wall south of 64 to 57, but decided it was too much effort, particularly if nobody's gonna appreciate it or be using it.  OK, here's the updated small version of the scoring track:

I think it looks better.  I'll wait for Matt to give me instructions on how to send him the full version of the file (if he wants to host it here).

I haven't scanned any Carcassonne stuff yet.  All I've done is plagarised the scans off BGG (mostly scans done by Matt).  Matt can probably tell you how he scanned his tiles to get such a nice finish.  All I know is - scan at (at least) 300 dpi.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mjharper on April 06, 2008, 01:47:17 AM
The new version looks great. Be happy to host it. You could pm me a copy, or send it directly via email (my email is plastered all over my website).

I'm a bit busy at the moment, so I'd probably just add it to the current downloads section, rather that try to rebuild the downloads section right away

Oh, and most of the scans on BGG are by other people ;) I've scanned a few things, but I'm no expert…

look at the 40's...

45, 46, 47, 48, 46, 49, 50... a "46" is stuck between the 48 & the 49...

hai!!

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Scott on April 14, 2008, 05:29:27 PM
For my next request, which doesn't need to be done all at once... a set of proper forest tiles that actually match with the stock Carc tiles. There are some tiles in the Big Box that have a clump of trees at a junction which might make good source images for the forest part. As for what the tiles should look like, basically take any city tile (starting with basic Carc) and change the city part to forest.

In the future, some forest tiles could include a wood trade good.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 14, 2008, 07:53:58 PM
Wow, that's asking quite a bit.  It might be faster to actually draw and colour the trees than to use those at the junction.  I'll see what I can do later when I get the time.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Wishmaster on April 15, 2008, 05:01:17 AM
That's pretty good!

Given what you managed there, you may not need to, but you could always nick the forest images from Hunters & Gatherers.

Meanwhile, I too have a request that you you may or may not want a bash at.... I'm after three specific tiles that could match with 'The Castle' :

a) A portcullis Tower piece. This would be 50% of the tile with a horizontal split (Grass on the other half)

b) A Chapel (Bit of a challenge then!) It could have a small bit of drass show on each corner or cover the entire tile. Possibly Brown colour (as opposed to dark red or grey)

c) A tile that has two towers in diagonally opposite corners, two house in the other corners and all split vertical and horizontal by a cross-road, that is blocked in the centre, so it becomes 4 road ends.

Don't want a lot do I !!! Take a look at my Castle threads and you will guess why! No worries if you want to ignore all of this.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 15, 2008, 07:06:23 AM
Heh, you don't have to compliment me only because you want me to do things for you.

First off, I thought of the H&G forests but decided that the "colour scheme" doesn't work with the normal Carc tiles, so I decided to make my own forest.  I don't think they look too bad, but like all things, they can always be improved.

With regards to 'The Castle'...

I've been keeping track of http://solsticewars.mysite.orange.co.uk/ and yesterday I was looking at this (http://solsticewars.mysite.orange.co.uk/gallery.html) and went "Hmm..."

I was playing around with the 2 tiles:

(http://solsticewars.mysite.orange.co.uk/images/tiles/DeadEndWithVillage.jpg) and (http://solsticewars.mysite.orange.co.uk/images/tiles/Lith.jpg)

and finally finished this today (click on the image below for the full size print version):

(http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/Lithsmall.jpg) (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/Lith.jpg)

What do you think?  Did I get it right with the colour scheme, or is it supposed to be darker?  I'll have to redraw the dead end village so that it doesn't use images from Carc, and that will probably take some time.

With regards to your requests, could you sketch something out and send it to me so that I know exactly what you require... and I'll attempt to get them done.  I strive to keep everyone happy!

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Wishmaster on April 15, 2008, 09:42:30 AM
Hey I like it, there's getting your own back!! Ha Ha  ;D

Unfortunately you've picked on two tiles that are no longer involved in the game - Quite a bits changed in the last couple of months. The lith (that's the pile of rocks) has been removed from the game, and at present so have all the dead end roads... or should I say Dykes as I'm now referring to them. The village symbol is intentionally separate from the road as an indicator. However, I do like you're version of them, very pretty indeed, and above my level of expertise.

I'll see what I can come up with for you regards the Castle sketches - Thanks!

Really do like your forest tiles now you've but the block of three on view.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 15, 2008, 09:46:11 AM
RE: Forest tiles, well, if Scott likes the look, I'll continue with them on 2 sides, then 3 then 4.  It's gonna take quite a bit of work to accomplish.

RE: Solstice War - just a sketch with pencil on paper would do - details not necessary if labels are used.  That way I won't have to interpret your words into a picture :)

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Scott on April 15, 2008, 05:33:05 PM
The forest tiles look great! I'm glad that you were able to figure out what I was asking for. My goal is to see forests become a new landscape feature. adding variety, and helping to break up farms. The number of tiles that could be done would qualify this as a full-size expansions, so I will wait patiently because it will take a while to complete.

Scott: I only have Matt's scans from K,C & C, and the A&M and GQ11 expansion scans from BGG.  I'm desperately looking for a good set of scans for the earlier expansions.  I'll work on GQ11 for the time being, but if anyone can help scan some good quality images for T&B, I&C, Tower, P&D, Cathars, Rivers1 and the Base set, I'd be happy.  (And if you're going that route, might as well go the full 9-yards (or whatever the expression is) and scan K,C&C, A&M and GQ11, so that I can have a consistant "set" to make expansions with).

I have I&C, K&S, P&D, Riv II, Count, Tower, and T&B.  Maybe I'm a nutjob but I scanned them all in immediately after buying them. Will zip them up and make available today. I'm a little rushed so I just have them all in one file rather than just the ones you need, its a big zip file, about 70MB, I'll PM you the link.

Carc World is Joff's site; I just help with putting the documents together.

I'm getting a little concerned about how long it's been since Matt posted.

If something doesn't happen soon, I think it should be uploaded to a file sharing type site (eg. Megaupload) and everybody who wants it can grab from there until we can get it posted somewhere more permanent. It worked great for sending it the first time.

Okay, the 100 point board is available now.  Go to the home page, click Downloads, Public Downloads.

Whenever you guys want me to post anything else on our public downloads page, just PM me with a link to the material and I'll put it up! (yeah, we now have a public downloads page. Executive decision in Matt's absence!)

Thanks Novelty!

And a quick note on Matt: he hasn't answered his emails nor has he been checking in here, but I noticed his personal blog has been updated very recently, so I'm guessing he's doing well, just taking a Carc break.

Well, I must say Scott did most of the work.  I only numbered it from 51 to 99, joined the paths together and made it look a wee bit nicer.

How do I get them on the site or to someone who can do something with them?

If you went to the Public Downloads section of CC's main web site, and the graphic opened up in your browser small, then you might have your browser set to fit images to your browser window.  If you click on that image it should open up to the actual size, or right-click and save it to your computer, then print it from there.

Make them available to the incredibly talented individuals here, such as yourself, to make up new tiles

Well, I think we should perhaps have a central resource for them.  Since gantry is hosting files, perhaps it might be a good idea to have them there instead?  I know I get enough messages asking me for tiles and such.

Sure thing, I think it's a great idea.  That's what this site is for - it's your community.

BTW now is as good a time as any to mention I'll be away camping from Friday to Monday nite, so if anyone needs anything, you can either ask Canada Steve, Tobias, or wait until I return.

what does the forest do for the main game? is there an expansion that uses forest that I dont have? (I.E. P&D, Tower, etc)

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Scott on June 14, 2008, 03:53:43 PM
Yay for more forest tiles!

I agree with Joff that we need some more, especially tiles occupied by a larger percentage of forest. There could even be a tile which is 100% forest, or forest on all sides with a clearing in the middle containing a cloister. I like the tile where the forest touches the river, separating the farm on either side. A few more ideas: road disappearing into the forest; road through the forest which has no farm space between road and forest?

Maybe I can draw out all my ideas on paper...

@djwurm: Once upon a time I asked Novelty to make forest tiles. The purpose is to add more variety to the landscape and reduce the formation of mega-farms. In the future it could be made possible to allow meeple deployment to forests and/or earn lumber trade goods for the completion of forests.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Scott on June 14, 2008, 06:01:20 PM
My eyes hurt now. :o

I drew every forest tile I could think of. Guaranteed some of them you already did.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=82RF3L1D (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=82RF3L1D)

I think a cult place in a forest clearing would be an especially good tile, since the followers of Woden were pretty big on worshipping in the forest.

I didn't bother duplicating tiles to show pennants or trade goods on cities. Anywhere you see a city, a variation of that tile could be done with a trade good or pennant as desired. I also didn't bother with tower foundations, but they could be placed anywhere with significant farm space. Same goes for dragon icons, volcanos, princess, etc.

Last but not least, any tile with significant farm space could potentially have a lumber trade good if it's desirable.

I have been trying for the last 10 minutes to get that download.  No go :(  All slots assigned are currently in use.

I agree we do need more.  I'm doing this systematically... top, then bottom, the sides, then centre to get the 100% forest tile.

oh, one other thing, if someone could please test the zip file using WINZIP and the unzipper built into Windows/Mac, I'd appreciate u letting me know if it works okay. I use Winrar to compress it and most ppl don't have that.

The way the credit is given now looks right to me. The scoring track was a collaboration because I did a bunch of initial graphics work. Any custom tiles, I would probably never be contributing anything more than inspiration. I leave the Photoshop work to the qualified people like Novelty. I do better with pencil and paper.

So yesterday I go to make the edit to the zip file, and my eval copy of SmartFTP "expired" and I had to download a new version. I download it, but whenever I try to run the installer, nothing happens except a splash screen that says it only works for 2 days at a time.  :bh

I switched away from my old FTP software because it didn't work very well,  smartftp is dumbftp... gah.  Gotta head out for the day, will have to upload it using the good old command line when I get back home 2nite.  >:(

Apparently "inspiration" can be pluralized, but it sounded awkward so I changed it.  :)

I switched to FileZilla after getting frustrated with SmartFTP. WinSCP is also supposed to be good.

for many years I used ws_ftp, but it didn't meet some obscure technical requirement one time so I switched to filezilla.  Filezilla had its own minor transmission bugs, plus i hated the interface (sad, because I love open source). The I switched to SmartFTP a little over a year ago and have been more or less happy with it, although now their trial license is getting so short you have to reinstall it far too often.

Might try WinSCP or NCH (http://www.nchsoftware.com/ftp/index.html)'s FTP. NCH is a very interesting Aussie company that makes a lot of freeware, and an interesting revenue model. The CC site administration module has an http upload feature so I can use that in the meantime. Sorry didn't mean to take the thread off-topic! The download (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=59) has been updated to v02 which includes the missing rivers!

Title: Custom Tiles
Post by: wicke on September 09, 2008, 09:53:59 AM
Novelty, I have some comments about your custom tiles:

First though, I would like to thank you for them since after the
Graf, König und Konsorten I have a second edition of the City of Carcassonne
that I don't need, and the King & Scout also have 5 tiles I don't need.

But, how come almost all custom tiles are river tiles (23 out of 29).
Isn't there enough river tiles already, especially now when many will be
getting a second edition of River II because of Graf, König und Konsorten.

Why aren't the tiles in the correct size (45x45 mm)? Every one that downloads
them will now sit for an hour or so to change them into the correct size.
Wouldn't it be possible to have them accessible in the correct size directly.

And I really don't see the point with a forest.
Do you know of any other site that has GOOD additional tiles for free download ?

Cheers

Title: Re: Custom Tiles
Post by: Novelty on September 09, 2008, 02:25:03 PM
There are mostly river tiles because I was making them for my variant Row, row, row you meeple in a boat (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=236.0) which needed a lot more river tiles than there are currently.  The forest tiles are for Scott.  I have no idea why they don't print out in the actual size for you, but the tiles I print out are actual size for me (but then again, I have the original images... I wonder if Gantry did anything to the images to get them zipped and ready for downloading...).  I was going to pdf the files (one for row, one for forest, one for others) once I have all the tiles for any one variant expansion ready, but that's not gonna happen for a while yet.

As Tobias said, you are free to use or disregard them if you wish.  Or you can also request your own custom tiles in this thread (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=285.0).  If you want to download other tiles, you can try www.carcassonne-welt.de or whatever is the german equivalent of this site.

Edit: I see now that the forest images are wrongly sized.  My mistake.  I'll have to correct it sometime...

Alright, a new custom tiles zip file is available in downloads (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=59).

It's getting pretty big, so my idea of creating a new all-images-in-one zip file is a bit hard on the bandwidth, so next time around I think I will just make individual update zips with only the newest additions in them.

I'd like to see some too, but I'm at the moment in the middle of forests and I don't want to be in the middle of 2 things.  Also I'll need to keep an eye out for a vineyard image I can "steal" or find the time to draw something in the same style as Carcassonne and either one of those would take some time.  I'll keep the idea in mind, but I hope you understand and accept my apologies for why I can't entertain this request right now.  I will definately try to do so in the future, perhaps when I have more time!

If you just want new tiles, with no new rules, then you don't need an expansion.  It's up to you which of the tiles you want to use, so you can download what you like and make those into tiles.

I'm not sure if something like this has been done, I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist in the official tiles.
    C
R       R

with the roads both being dead ends.  It might be a huge farm extender, but maybe we can see what the reaction is.  Also the same thing except have a city cap instead of the field.

Thanks Novelty, those look awesome.

I've always liked the tile from P&D with the C - F- C-C and the cloister in it.  Maybe you could do some tiles that incorporate cloisters/cult into cities.

    R
C       C
     F
with the city connected one with a cult and another with a cloister.  Maybe a C-C-C-F all connected city with a cult in it.

Perhaps this is crazy but what about a tile that goes

    R
C      C
    R

but has the roads tunnel under a city that bridges over so that the field is continuous.  Just some random ideas that have been coming to me.  Take them or leave them.

Here's the one with the road:

    R
C       C

with the city connected one with a cult and another with a cloister.
You mean with the city as a bridge going over the road, and not splitting the farm? That's in the Treasure Hunt expansion. Tile 14.

When I saw the blank tiles in CS&C, my first thought was an FFSS tile, with a shrine in it, but with the river curling around the shrine (sketch available on request). However, I don't know how feasible it would be to make that tile look good, nor am I sure if it will ever happen, after seeing the exact tile (but with the shrine outside of the river) in one of the Fishermen tile pages (fishmen3.pdf).

As for farm extenders, how about doing something interesting involving a CRRF tile? Traditionally, this shape hasn't received nearly as much love as CFRR, so it would be nice to give it something new, without making a "left handed" version. Maybe something like the attached image, perhaps?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles

Lardarse, just because a tile has already been made, but it's not in your vision doesn't mean that it can't be remade again to be the way you want it.  I'll queue up your tiles to be rendered after I finish mathguy's request... right now I'm still on his cult and cloisters.  Here's the cult place on the same 2 tiles posted above.  I'm going to work on the butterfly city tile next followed by the tunnel/bridge tile (that sounds interesting) and then I'll attempt the shrine river tile.

Edit: Image removed.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on November 29, 2008, 06:34:46 AM
Here's the bowtie city with a cloister and a shrine.  I removed the road from the shrine just to differentiate the 2.  That's 8 tiles Mathguy, and the tunnel will make 9 tiles.  3 more and you get a sheet :)

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on November 29, 2008, 06:47:00 AM
I think this is the last tile that mathguy wanted me to make... if I got any wrong, well please let me know.  I also threw in an extra tile with the tunnel since we hardly get that pointy city section... so that makes it 10.  2 more and we can add the sheet to the completed expansions section :)

Novelty - great work, thanks so much for all the time you devote to this.

I know its a widely used set-up of
    C
R      R
    R
but could you do that with the pointy city.  Maybe have two of those roads connecting to each other and touching the wall of the city.

And to make 12 - how about a cathedral in the middle of the tile with Roads on all for sides, with the top and left roads connected; right and bottom just leading to the cloister and ending.

Thanks again

A Cathedral?  What use would it be?  It would never be in a city if there are roads on all 4 sides...

Edit: I presume you mean Cloister instead of Cathedral, which is what I've done.  I don't think I can fit the curve of the road with that "pointy city" segment as you call it, so it's just 3 separate roads.  Here's the pdf file (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/mathguy89.pdf) and it's added to the Completed Variants (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=479.0) list.

Edit2: Also, please feel free to continue to post your ideas... I can always create a second sheet or something if there are enough tiles.  Everyone else is also free to post.

Nice to know. And wow, that shrine looks so cool! And... I don't know about my vision, but I am thinking about something where the positioning of objects on a tile in relation to a road or river may be important. Maybe something I'm working on, perhaps? ;)

The other tile wasn't quite what I had in mind, however. The intention was that the 2 roads would end in inns (hence the filename). Admittedly, the blue and red things only look slightly like inns, but I don't know if it would look as good to have the roads end in nowhere and have an inn next to them. You may need to play with the road directions to pull this one off. Maybe have the south road bend to the left a little, so that there's room for the inn on that side. I was also thinking that it might be useful for the farm extender tile page.

But if we're talking aboout evil roads... how about an RRRR roundabout with an inn in the middle?

Well... I read this thread with some more attention and I found it useful for me because I'm looking for new tile configurations and here we can get some. Thanks to the participants...

Post by: Novelty on November 29, 2008, 08:32:27 PM
Lardarse, those inns are big... I don't think I can fit in 2 inns onto a tile even with rearranging the road, simply because the road has to end where it ends to connect to the other tiles.  I can play around and try, but I don't think I will be successful.

Edit: I can't fit the Inn in the roundabout (I've gotta get an image from the Catapult for the roundabout there), so here's one by the side.  I'll try and see if I can fit the inn into the Catapult roundabout.

Edit: Image removed.

OK, I finally managed to jiggle all the graphics into one tile.  Here's the 2 Inns on 2 roads that you requested.

This wasn't as difficult as I thought... Inn inside roundabout.  That is tile #5 if you are counting.  7 more and it gets a sheet :)

Post by: Lardarse on November 30, 2008, 07:19:37 PM
I am liking that pub roundabout. Looks more like a Carcassonne tile then the A&M roundabouts, in terms of the roads being slightly bendy and not completely straight, which the A&M roundabout doesn't quite capture.

I also like the two inns tile. I think you maybe misunderstood what I meant when I said that you might have to bend it. I was thinking a sharp corner as in the south edge of the first 2 tiles of the middle row of this image from A&M (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/289685). But you made it work anyway. No wonder everyone is asking you to do their tile art!

But I'll pass on the PDF until I have a working colour printer, which knowing my luck with printers, isn't going to be any time soon...

I think you maybe misunderstood what I meant when I said that you might have to bend it.
I didn't misunderstand you, but even with the bending, it would have been a squeeze to fit in the inns and the lakes.  Anyways I'm glad you like them.

New to this board - my apologies if this has been covered elsewhere (and if so, a link would be great!!!)

My number one request would be the City of Carcassonne (from The Count) done as a single tile.

Novelty, your skills are much appreciated.
No rush on these, but I thought up a few more that might be interesting.

Road on all sides, 3 of them in a roundabout style with a 4th only going 1/4 of the way in so as to only create 3 separate farms, as opposed to 4.
Perhaps 2 copies of that, one with an inn on the roundabout, one without.

Also how about a tile that has 4 separate city caps, but no farmland in the middle.
And perhaps a cult with 4 roads leading away from it.

In keeping with part of the theme from my first set - how about three different tiles each with a city cap, and one partial road - so as to extend the farm around.

So
   C         C         C
R     F   F    F     F   R
   F          R         F

and maybe two tiles each with 2 roads in the same style

   C        C
R    F    F   R
   R        R

Thanks so much - I'll try to think up some more to get to a set of 12

Mathguy, I'm a bit busy for the next week or 2 to do custom tiles, so I guess they'll have to wait.  Would you mind if I sneak in a Winter version of the tiles or two into the set though?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles

This falls in the category of "Gee, if you had all the time in the world, could you make these?" so no worries if you continue the great playing tiles as always.

When we play using Traders & Builders, we generally have a clear victor early on as to who will get the points for each of the trade goods. Rather than keep a bunch of little counters in front of that person, it would be nice to have three tiles similar to and the same size as the King and Robber Baron tiles to indicate the Chief Wine Trader, the Chief Grain Trader, and the Chief Cloth Trader.

Again, nice but most of the other suggestions pending would probably be a better use of your time.

Thanks.

Chief Wine Trader, the Chief Grain Trader, and the Chief Cloth Trader.
Great idea, but probably not possible from me because I'm not that great an artist.  Well, I will keep this in mind if I come across the right image that I can use for these tiles...

Edit: That is a good idea about the City of Carcassonne!  Here is the PDF (http://www.dukenostalgia.com/junk/coc.pdf).  Enjoy.

Two more tiles, mathguy, to get 12.  Here's the 4roads shrine and the no farm city:

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mathguy89 on December 05, 2008, 09:58:43 PM
Novelty, I have to say that the 4 way city cap is a great piece of artwork.  Could you throw an inn on one of the road segments on the cult tile, call that the 11th.

I'm thinking of something like a

     R
R       S
     S

with a cult in the middle if that's do-able.  If not I'll try to think up something else.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on December 05, 2008, 10:04:00 PM
The inn on the cult tile might not be possible, as it would be confusing which section of the road the inn is on.  The RRSS should be fine - but do you want the road to be continuous or to end in huts?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mathguy89 on December 05, 2008, 10:17:59 PM
Let's have the roads end in huts for that tile.

Scratch the inn - can you do two curved roads - one from top to left, the other from bottom to right, with a cult in the middle?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: koolkat on December 06, 2008, 02:20:15 PM
Novelty, is the 4-way city tile a CCCC tile type?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mathguy89 on December 06, 2008, 02:59:28 PM
Koolkat- from what I requested it is a CCCC, but none of the cities are actually connected.  Consider it the same as the 4 cap space with the grass in the middle, except you can't throw up to a 12 point farmer in there.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: koolkat on December 06, 2008, 03:19:14 PM

It is surrounded by walls, so it functions like any other cap.

Not a tile but....

I would like to see a little "character sheet" upon which you set your non-deployed meeples during the game. There would be outlines of all the meeple types where you could set your pieces and also an area for captured prisoners.

On a similar note, I know I saw little pictures of the various meeple types to be used when designing variants. Can someone give me the link to that?

Thanks.

Next up is 2 more tiles for Oz, then I'll get to your tiles scotty.  Sorry about the wait.  And for those keeping track, after that, I'll be working on the rules for Oz with the wizard sometime over the weekend.

I don't have 12 tiles at the moment so I start with three.

1. A new tile 6 for Carcassonne City. The buildings below the cathedral made into a prison, with six dots or something, for the expansion Prison by Kevin Graham.
This tile could also be drawn on the 12section tile that you made for kjamma4

2. The Avignon City tile, with Avignon on a sign or flag. Best would be to have a tile with the configuration CCSR (but I could also use one extra Avignon tile with CCRR to use for play without fishermen)

3. A Fishmonger tile, but if you come up with a better image and a better name, I’m all for it

You will get additional info about these tiles, on email

You don't need to give me 12 tiles at one go.  Just post what you come up with here and when I get to 12, I'll PDF them for you.  If the tiles you want are for a custom fan-made expansion, then obviously it will go there and you don't need 12.  I'll queue you after scotty13, wicke.

Well, I've finished my Oz tiles, so here are scotty's 2 tiles.  10 more to go before you get a sheet, scotty.

Next up, template the Oz rules including the purple wizard, and to get wicke's Avignon tile up, then the prison.  Wicke - your fishmonger tile, who's the artist of that image, and can you provide me a copy of that image to make into a tile?  Thanks.

Everyone else, please feel free to keep the suggestions flowing.  I'll get to your tile when I get the time, I promise, but you have to make sure your instructions are clear to me.

I like that idea. They would be great when using P&D or Dual Dragon. I certainly would like to pick the tile that allowed me to place a dragon and then immediately invoke the Dragon movement. Well done. This needs a short rules supplement also.

Lardarse, that way I don't have to keep track of where those files are :)

wicke, I don't think I can merge the prison with Tile 6 of CoC.  How about you just place the prisoner on Tile 1 with a die to track the 6 turns?

Also, I'm still waiting for a bigger and better quality image of your Fishmonger... and if you have permission for it to be used publicly.  Please let me know.

Deatheux, I'm sorry, but I don't have scans with the borders to work with, so I have to recreate them.  I think it doesn't look as good as my usual tiles, but it'll have to do.  Here's the pdf file (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/images/download/catharsiege.pdf).

I appreciate everything you're doing here -

let's start with

C        1. There are two separate cities, traditional cap the the roads both dead end before touching, so that there is one farm
R    R     2. Same tile design except have the right road curve up to the top city then the left road curve to the bottom city, so that there would be 3 distinct farms

I tried, and failed.  It's too much work to redo them.  I think I'll leave them and start with the gamma tiles instead.

Sorry I haven't even worked on the tiles yet.  Between making real tiles and the graphics request and reviewing Joff's rules, my time is gone.  There's never enough time.

No problem.  My hands can use the break anyways.  Scissor use gets very painful after a very long time.

I got a pair of good quality Japanese steel scissors.  I'm happy with those!

Anyways, here is the tile that you requested.  I put bushes on the road so that no one can place a meeple there and gain 1 point when placing the tile.  Also, mathguy, what do you think of the gamma watermark?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mathguy89 on January 09, 2009, 02:20:17 AM
I like the watermark.

2 different tile requests for when you have the time.

   R
R      R         1.All roads dead end before middle.
R         2. North south for bridge, East West underground tunnel - so there is one field.

Thanks again
Last ones I have for now - trying to think up more.  What's my count for a sheet at?

C            1.3 separate cities- Dead end road before cities
R      C         2.Road makes connections with all 3 cities
   C

Then
C            1.Separate cities, roads curve without touching cities.
R      C                      2. Separate cities Road curves to touch both cities, such that the wagon could go from to the other.
   R

2. Separate cities Road curves to touch both cities, such that the wagon could go from to the other.
I'm not sure if the wagon can go from one city to another.  It has to go to the road first.  Also, I'm uncertain if the wagon can move from a road to a city (and the reverse) if a road just "touches" a city without actually going to a gate.  Can someone check the CAR and/or the rules forum to see if this has been answered?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles

Whenever you get a chance, and tell me if these exist, I'm pretty sure it's not in the official, but one of the fan-made might have these.

   C
R    R            Continuous road, has a branch to go up to the city for potential wagon movement also a cloister on the tile and
F               a different tile, same edges, with a cult.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on January 17, 2009, 05:17:28 AM
Nope, nothing official or fan-made is like that.  I can't promise you I'll do it soon (it might be if I get the time), but it's in the queue :)  So that brings it up to 10.  Do you want to describe 2 more so that we reach 12 and I can "sheet" it when I get the time?  Thanks.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on January 22, 2009, 02:41:18 AM
OK, tiles 9 and 10.  I modified the shrine tile after I made this image, but it's small and hopefully not noticable in this one, so I didn't update this one.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: mathguy89 on January 22, 2009, 01:46:48 PM
so for 11 and 12 can we do the same tiles as 9 and 10 except with the cult losing the bottom road, and the cloister losing the top road?  And then I think that makes the set.

Hi novelty, just wondering if you could do a few well tiles? I have a few ideas (you can use the well from A&M).
1. Three-way road with well in centre (like A&M)
2. Four-way road with well in centre
3. FRFR straight road with well
4. FFRR curved road with well

I know you're busy, but when you get the time...

I'm not sure what you want me to do here?  Copy the tile from A&M?

2. Four-way road with well in centre

Ok... well, if you could do another two, maybe try a RRFF curved road with two wells, and a RFRF straight road with two wells...

I'm hoping to eventually make a sheet of tiles here...

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: meepleater on January 31, 2009, 01:54:29 AM
If you have any more time,
5. FRFR straight road with 2 wells
6. FFRR curved road with 2 wells
EDIT: Oh whoops I mentioned these in my previous post
7. RFFF road ending in roundabout thing with well in centre (I guess the roundabout isn't important but it would look better IMHO)

As for the four way roundabout, could you add a second well somewhere by one of the roads so that it has two wells instead of one?

Also, maybe possibly duplicate tiles 3 and 4 from my previous posts? I think that's 9 by now...

A, I'll get to those tiles after I finish working on the tiles for Fairy Tales.  Might take a while.  Meanwhile, pls continue to post until you get up to 12 (or 15)

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: meepleater on January 31, 2009, 02:46:09 PM
Okay...
(in all of my descriptions, imagine the city ending is on top)
10. CFFR a road ending at a roundabout thing (once again, unessential but would look cool) with a well, in front of a city ending piece, the field would go around the roundabout so there is one big field.
11. CRRF a city ending with one road going from the bottom to the top entering the city and the other going over a bridge ending at a house (so a mirror image of the one in T&B) but instead of ending at the house it could end in a roundabout with a well.
12. CRRR a city ending with two roads, one going from left to right over a bridge, the other going from the bottom to the city under the bridge. This time the road going under the bridge could have a well on it. If you have trouble imagining the road ending in a roundabout thing I've got some very dodgy tile drafts that show that if you want to see them...

And that brings it up to 12 tiles. Could you possibly do a watermark? Maybe a sillhouette (if that's spelt right) of a well?

Thanks a lot for all of this! I will type up a draft rules (unformatted or anything) and e-mail it to you if you want to do them.

I somewhat new here, Been reading all the posts that has been keeping me busy. Love all the different tiles that everybody has been coming up with, wish I had the talent to create some tiles.

Any way I have a thought on some tiles but I don't know if people would like them or that they would look good when created. My thoughts are adding water fall to the rivers and lakes. this would stop the fisherman from continuing on the river but wouldn't be able to take his fisherman off because the river isn't done yet. Also have some lakes have the river continue  through them.

Just my two cents worth.

Welcome to Carcassonne Central.

You might not have the talent to actually create tiles, but your idea is an excellent one! Adding a waterfall, as well as being an interesting feature on the river, is a great way to stop the fisherman fishing past it but preventing the player taking the fisherman back.

Welcome from me as well.  Yes, waterfalls are a nice idea, and I've actually seen someone else make the tile here and used it as their avatar but I can't remember who it was (perhaps it was hester...).

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles

Would that be permanently stuck on the river or you have to finish the river past the waterfall?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Joff on February 14, 2009, 06:06:58 PM
I would imagine that the waterfall would form part of the river, but not completely end the river. The river would have to be completed in the normal way, and only then would any fisherman be able to be returned to the player, but they would not be able to fish past the waterfall.

You would have to finish the river past the water fall.

Rapids sound like a good Idea. Maybe the rapids could increase the value of the river for the person who has there fisherman on the river.

So far there is no set rules for the waterfalls. they are sort of revolving from this thread. All suggests are welcome. If there is enough interest, maybe a new thread needs to be created for Waterfalls and Rapids?

Yep, that was me. I abondoned the idea of actually using it in play though because it somehow looks "wrong", especially if you put two of them next to each other. It's like the landscape is going up and down arbitrarily, which is made even worse if one of the falls is turned sideways or upside down.

Hester, Those tiles look great. There should some that are go 90 degrees, some that are at the branchoffs, and some that go right into the lake. I was also thinking of waterfalls after the lake and continue on as another river.

I also saw tiles of lakes that get placed like cities. Is this a expansion from here or from a link to another site. That one looks kind of interesting.

Another thougt is to add inns next to the river to go with the Inn owners variant.

The river tiles (without the waterfalls) are from mehrfluss or the Neue Flusskarten download from HiG's former fan-made site.  You can still download the tiles from HiG Downloads (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=51&Itemid=65).

The waterfall tiles are by Hester.  You will have to get them from her :)

I know you're busy, but if you have the time, I was thinking of a sequal to the wells expansion... here are some more ideas

1. CRFR A city end, with a road going past. the road has a roundabout (with a well) with one branch entering the city (for wagon and trading posts expansions)
2. CFRR A city end with a curved road similar roundabout and well as above
3. CRRF same as above, yet road curves other way
4.RFRF straight road with inn and well

nothing urgent, just when you have the time...
thanks!

I'll have to see what I can come up with...

Is there anything you can use here?

http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/black-hole.html

I know Apple has one of those tools that lets you swirl a photo.  It is probably a tool elsewhere as well if you don't have an Apple.  If you just want to use two CCCx tiles, or one of those and a CCxx tile, I think that would be best.  If you don't have tool that can do it, perhaps I can ask a friend who does.  In fact, I know just the guy to ask.  Let me know what to do.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 11, 2009, 11:08:45 PM
No and no to those images.  I don't even have to look.  You'll need to get permission from the authors to use those images.

Also, a blackhole is a bit scifi for a medieval game such as Carcassonne.  Perhaps you'd need to refine the idea a bit more.  How about magical doorways?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: CKorfmann on April 12, 2009, 11:32:31 AM
Well, I thought there might be some opposition to the worm hole idea, but when you consider the magic portal, it's not that far fetched, I guess.  However, since I anticipated the possibility of some people not buying the idea, I thought of an alternative.  That being a large tunnel with an entrance in a city on each tile.  Both tiles could be any configuration of city, as long as the city section take up most of the tile, with a large picture of a tunnel entrance on it.  For instance: one CCCC tile and one CCFF tile where the city comes to a point between the two farm sides making two fields.  You could also use a CCCR or CCCF tile.

I initially sent you those websites because it said "free clip art" on the page.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 12, 2009, 05:46:34 PM
There's actually a rather nice tunnel expansion out there (was it solazy?) and I'd rather not encroach into that idea as well.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: CKorfmann on April 12, 2009, 07:54:06 PM
Well, if it is indeed Solazy's expansion you are thinking about, it is quite different.  His tunnel simply goes under a wall from a tower foundation into a city for a thief to steal points from it.  The concept is altogether different and I don't think it would be an encroachment.  If you still don't think this or the wormhole will work, do you have another suggestion for a feature that would accomplish the same thing (i.e. link two seperate cities to score as one)?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 12, 2009, 08:26:23 PM
I suggested a "Magical doorway" in a previous post.  A tunnel would work, but as I said, it would be encroaching on the concept (if not the actual mechanics) and graphics for solazy's tunnels.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: CKorfmann on April 12, 2009, 09:12:27 PM
I disagree that it is encroaching on either.  The only similarity is the word "tunnel."  The art I have in mind would be completely different from the art on his tile and the function is also completely different.

A "magical doorway" doesn't seem to be any more or less palatable than a wormhole to me.  It also sounds like it would be too similar to the magic portal.

Let me see if I can come up with something that is decent.  I've got a guy...  ;)  I'll get back to you on this one.  In the mean time, would you be willing to send me a scan of a typical CCCC tile and a CCCR tile?  Perhaps also a CCFF tile with divided farms, like I described earlier, just for good measure.  Thanks for your input.

An illustrated version of something like THIS (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/10/Gagra_train_tunnel.jpg) is what I had in mind, right in the middle of the city portion of the tile (two tiles) and big enough for everyone to see.  That's really it.

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: Novelty on April 13, 2009, 09:19:02 AM
Ah, that will require me to draw that tunnel/arch/thing onto the tile.  I'm a bit pressed for time at the moment, so I think I'll pass.  Besides, if I draw it, it'll look like the Arc d'Triumph (or however that is spelt - me no speakie francais) instead of a tunnel.

Novelty,

I would like you to do the artwork for two graveyard tiles (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/482513) as seen as an expansion that I offered on BoardGameGeeks.com.

The black boarder around the one graveyard can be the same thickness.

Sure Viktor.  Do you want them to look more or less like that?

Also, can I make the black border thickness the same as the abbey border thickness?

Title: Re: Requests for new tiles
Post by: DasViktor on June 01, 2009, 03:05:41 PM
I would like them to look like the typical green tile with head stones on them. You can use the head stone placement unless you got something you think would look better. I did add some shadows to the head stones.

I know it is small work, but if you notice on one of the grave markers, I made a little blue meeple. Ad lib, if you wish.

Yes, if the border could be the same width as that on the Abbey, that would be great. These were just my prototypes. I wish I had more than 2 blank tiles.  :(

Thanks,
Viktor

Yes, I considered purchasing the Big Box for spares. Dividing the price of the Big Box by total number of tiles, I found it much more cost-effective to purchase the blank tiles that chr15lynn offered. Unfortunately, I haven't heard back from him.

I've started a new thread for the Grim Reaple (http://www.carcassonnecentral.com/forum/index.php?topic=960.0).  Would you mind if I draft out the rules in the Carc Central format and make it available in the public downloads as well?

Sounds interesting, but remember there is already a blacksmith section in the CoC...

And pharmacist? Maybe a herbalist or alchemist...

Hello,
I have just read through the posts on this forum and the tile ideas are great!
There has been no post on here for around 2 years - is this because it is not possible for new tiles to be requested, or simply because every possible tile has already been created by someone on here?
If someone could give me an answer then I would be greatful, but if not, no worries!
Thanks,
Will

I don't think it's so much that every tile has been thought of, but more that the guy who was making them doesn't come around too much anymore.

I'm sure there are more tiles out there that can be made, but the 2 year downtime is probably because the forum was offline for about a year of that.  It has only been up and running for a few months after the last crash.  And yeah Korf, it's a pity that Gantry doesn't come around too much anymore ;)

As someone with no tile design skills

If anyone who does, feels like pasting a raised fist or revolution logo on city tiles for my vive la revolution expansion, I would be much obliged.

I had an idea for an expansion (cursed Pennant)

the tiles I had in mind were the four quarters of a pennant,
so

top left would be a FCCC with the left city edge being a stone wall.
top right would be the reverse, FCCC with the right city edge being a stone wall.
bottom left would be CCFF but the wall accross the diagonal would be convex rather than concave.
and bottom left would be CFFC and the wall accross the diagonal would be convex rather than concave.

and each would have its quarter of a quarter pennant, in green and yellow

and 4 tokens that would fit together to make a big green and yellow pennant.

could anyone put this together?

I would like to see a huge wine-cellar tile (building almost as large as the entire tile) so we can use that together with the vineyards (not thinking about rules here)
and an olive tree orchard + press mills for olive oil
sunflower fields + press mils for sunflower oil + shop to sell sunflower seeds
melon fields

these fields can replace the original green tiles so we can make farming more fun !!

tiles with some wild horses

Don't know if anyone will read this, but I want two tiles. One city-city-city-farm with a cathedral, and onother city-city-city-road with a cathedral. Two cathedral tiles on one mega Carcassonne game is not enough.

I could do this easily for you but I do not have good quality cathedral tiles to start with.  :-[
Anyone have any good resolution cathedral tiles?
